Holding Absence werden sich diese Woche mit ihrem neuen und dritten Studioalbum „The Noble Art Of Self Destruction“ zurückmelden.
„After an insanely busy and fulfilling album cycle for our second record, last October we spent a month in Jukasa Studios Canada, to record more new music. This record – the third in a trilogy – is by far our most conceptually rich and expansive body of work to date. We feel like these songs are almost a love letter to everything Holding Absence, and can’t wait to show everybody just how much space we have managed to cover, and how hard we were able to push ourselves with these songs.“
Die Band ist seit ihrem Erfolgsalbum „The Greatest Mistake of My Life“ ein aufstrebender Stern am Musikhimmel und war u.a. dieses Jahr als Support von Electric Callboy zu sehen.
Nun geht es in Runde drei und wir freuen uns, euch heute das Album vorstellen zu dürfen.

Mit 10 Tracks fällt das Album zumindest auf dem Papier kurz aus, doch lasst uns beginnen:
Ihr wollt Emotionen, ihr bekommt Emotionen:
Der erste Song startet mit Lucas‘ Stimme aus dem Off, ehe diese mit sanften Gitarren und Drums begleitet wird. Es geht in eine recht flotte Richtung, die zum mitsingen animiert und seinen Hauptfokus auf Drums und Vocals legt. Gegen Ende bricht der Song noch mal etwas aus und lässt das Album bockstark beginnen.
The introduction to the album, Head Prison opens the floor to album three’s themes, whilst closing the door to
album two. For the most part, this song uses the imagery of prison as a way of conveying a sense of
helplessness.
Diese Nummer dürfte vielen schon geläufig sein, war es doch die erste Single aus dem kommenden Album. Nun was soll ich sagen, ich liebe den Song, denn hier passt einfach alles. Der Song versprüht eine unglaubliche Atmosphäre und ich war bereits ab Sekunde eins gebannt. Frontmann Lucas singt sich wahrlich die Seele aus dem Leib. Die Lyrics könnten nicht verletzlicher sein und trotzdem erzeugen sie bei mir ein gutes Gefühl:
„Sing myself a crooked melody
Where I tell myself that it’s gonna be alright.
Yeah, it sets my soul on fire but I’m gonna be alright.
If I lie myself to sleep, then I’m gonna be alright.
As long as I don’t know.“
Wem der Song nicht gefällt, dem kann ich auch nicht mehr helfen.
Da passt die Beschreibung der Band tatsächlich sehr gut:
“A Crooked Melody is simply a song about denial. It’s the lie we tell ourselves every night to help us sleep, but deep down we know the truth. The big difference between a crooked melody and a lie, however, is that it’s sweet, enchanting and easier to swallow.”
„Flase Dawn“ schlägt in eine ähnliche Kerbe wie sein Vorgänger und nutzt gekonnt die Stärken der Band.
Alles unter dem Motto ‚Catchy Chorus‘ kombiniert mit einem treibenden Tempo. Durch den Gebrauch von Gang-Shouts bekommt der Song noch mal etwas Druck und wird live bestimmt gut ankommen.

Die Band zur Single folgendes zu sagen:
„We are ecstatic to be dropping our brand new single ‚False Dawn‘ today. This is definitely a personal favourite for all of us on the record! A somewhat defeatist song about denouncing expectations, and coming to grips with failure – this song is a quintessential Holding Absence song, with it’s uptempo energy and downtrodden introspection. Track Nr. 4 startet direkt durch und erinnert zu Beginn etwas an die Genre-Kollegen von Dayseeker. Doch Lucas markante Stimme macht den Unterschied und entfesselt auch hier eine catchy Nummer. Zum Schluss geht es noch mal ans Eingemachte und es gibt sogar einen kleinen Breakdown.
This song is quite encompassing of the album’s theme, as a whole. It looks at the idea that we as people must make sacrifices to evolve, but through a rather brutalist lens. The narrator knows they have to sever these parts of themself in order to grow, and they’ll do it, no matter the cost”.
Genau das richtige für die Romantik:
Das Lucas ein begnadeter Sänger ist, ich glaube darüber brauchen wir alle nicht mehr reden. Doch „Honey Moon“ setzt dem ganzen noch mal die Krone auf. Die Ballade legt überwiegend Wert auf die Vocals und deren Lyrics. Wer mal auf einem romantischen Date ist, der braucht genau so einen Song:
Honey, all I see is you
Dressed in the moon
And I know
If we can ever set together
Like constellations
We can live forever
Die Band über „Honey Moon“:
“Honey Moon is perhaps Holding Absence’s most beautiful song to date! A track inspired by the Pixies and Deftones – this is a lovesick poem that looks to the stars to portray a deep, isolated yearning for the love of another.”
„Death, Nonetheless“ nimmt das Tempo wieder auf und lässt jedem Instrument Zeit zum Glänzen. So hoffnungsvoll und schön „Honey Moon“ war, umso verzweifelter klingt „Death, Nonetheless“:
There’s no higher power.
Nobody left to love.
I am evanescent;
A nothing to become.
Der Song bedient auch ein ernstes Thema:
A bleak and defeatist song that implies that, due to deaths inevitability, life is pointless. This song teeters
brutally on the topic of existentialism, and suicide.
„Her Wings“ beschreibt den Tod:
Auch hier wird ein düsteres Thema besungen, nämlich der Tod selbst. Ähnlich wie sein Vorgänger „Death, Nonetheless“ wird eher eine bedrückende Stimmung erzeugt, was sich auch in den Lyrics widerspiegelt:

Beating rapid.
Distantly,
I hear her call my name.
I drop everything,
‘Cause I’m enchanted.
Desperately, I hear her call to me,
Through it all.
Es gibt wieder einen Hoffnungsschimmer:
„These New Dreams“ wirkt dafür wieder leichter, fröhlicher und könnte als perfekter Sommersong betitelt werden. Holding Absence schaffen hier den perfekten Spagat zwischen Verzweiflung und Hoffnung.
But these new dreams

Ashamed of all the things I’ve felt,
I’m trying to absolve myself.
Holding Absence über „These New Dawn“:
These New Dreams is a song about making a mistake and learning to live with yourself in the aftermath. We can’t always repent for our sins, but we can learn to absolve ourselves of guilt, and try to find peace on the other side.
„Liminal“ ist eine tanzbare Nummer, die wieder etwas mehr nach vorne geht, jedoch auf einem ähnlichen Niveau wie sein Vorgänger bleibt.

I hang like a puppet
Impaled on a coil. Just
waiting to find my fate
Die Band über „Liminal„:
Liminal exists in a frustrating purgatory. The song is about being caught between two things and just wanting to move – whether it’s forwards or backwards. This song is as self-destructive as it is hopeful, but either way, it’s a yearning for change.
Das Ende wird von „The Angel In The Marble“ eingeläutet:
Track Nr.10 legt noch mal alles auf eine Karte und zeigt das ganze Können der Band. Emotionale Vocals, atmosphärische Instrumente mit der nötigen Eindringlichkeit geben sich die Hand und lassen ein Album, welches als emotionale Achterbahnfahrt betitelt werden kann, enden.

Trust in the process.TAITM is a reference to Michelangelo’s David – a large inspiration for this album. Similar to Scissors, this song looks at the idea that sometimes you have to make sacrifices to evolve, but interestingly, like chiselling away at marble, sometimes you must destroy something, to create something better. The final lyric of the album is a hugely important one – imposing the idea that we as people are complex works of art, in our own rights.
Fazit:
Da ist also das dritte Album der Briten. „The Noble Art Of Self Destruction“ ist eine logische Weiterführung der beiden Vorgänger „Holding Absence“ und „The Greatest Mistake of My Life“, jedoch mit Schwächen. Stellenweise wiederholen sich manche Songs in ihrem Aufbau und bieten nur wenige große Highlights. Trotzdem kann es am Ende überzeugen und stellt sich, wie bereits oben beschrieben als Achterbahn der Gefühle heraus. Die große Stärke der Band liegt in den Vocals und diese weiß Frontmann Lucas gekonnt einzusetzen. Das Album wird der Band neue Wege ebenen und den Namen Holding Absence stärken. Anspieltipps sind „A Crooked Melody“, „False Dawn“ und „The Angel In The Marble“.
Für „The Noble Art Of Self Destruction“ gibt es 8/10 Punkte
